Place-Based education: Think about it

Place-based education was supported in my critical issues paper, but what are the downfalls of this approach? How does place-based education hold up under the scrutiny of state and national standards, education cuts, and a lack of understanding of place?  Critics of place-based education contend place-based education falls short of its ideal purpose. One of the major points of contention in place-based education is the "critical pedagogy of place".

Your task:  Please review the video and complete the activity below.
1.  Video:

2.  Follow-up activity-Mental map

Materials:
-1 sheet of scratch paper
-pencil

Please take 5 minutes and draw a map of the neighborhood you lived in as a child.  Make sure the map has a title and give your map as much detail as possible.  When you have finished your map, think about the following questions:
-How did you determine the boundaries of your neighborhood?
-Do any buildings not seem to fit in your neighborhood?
-What is the proportion of built objects to the area of natural objects?
-What features affected your interactions with others?
-What object/building is the most important (church, home, state building)?

This activity is used to determine your sense of place, one of the most critically contested elements in place-based education.  Each map is individualized and internalized, obviously showing the individuation of place and its potential pitfalls in state and national curriculum.
